Critical Incidents in Teaching

Various incidents in teaching that I experienced as a student while at school helped showed me the teacher that I had to be and the teacher not to become. Some of the experiences which were good and bad had me wondering how and why some people became teachers. The good experiences made me glad that I had the teacher that was teaching me and the bad experiences made wish that they never taught me. The first two incidents took place in primary school. I attended St. X’s primary school in San Fernando. I was in Standard One and my teacher Miss Y was in a very irritable mood that morning. She came into the classroom slammed her belongings on the table and shouted at the class to pick up our bags and go outside because she had to rearrange the classroom. For a long period of time we were outside waiting for her to finish in the classroom. Finally she called us back inside and placed us where she wanted us to sit. One of the problems was that the seats were too small and only could accommodate three people. The class was over crowded that four to five of us had to fit in one seat. Unfortunately I got placed at the very end of the bench and I was actually falling off my seat. I was afraid to approach my teacher that morning because of her mood that I decided to remain uncomfortable and suffer in silence. Miss Y turned to the class and said there is to be no talking for the rest of the day and anyone who talks will be punished. Being seated at the edge of the seat I quietly whispered to the other student next to me to move around a little so that I can get space to write properly as half of my book was off the desk. Miss Y turned around and asked me why I was I was talking when she said no one was to speak. I tried to explain to her the situation and she shouted at me to shut up. I attempted to reason with her again and she proceeded to my desk and hit me with the
