American Literature I February 13, 2013 Correspondence between John and Abigail Adams and her Influence First of all I would like to share a bit of the past into John and Abigail Adams’ lives because I think it adds to the definitive making of their lives together later on. John Adams first met Abigail through mutual friends, the Cranchs’. Abigail’s sister was married to Richard Cranch. John Adams was a young 27 years old and a lawyer when he began to consider taking Abigail’s hand in marriage. She was seventeen at the time. They were married on October 25, 1764. John was teaching and traveling trying to fulfill his political aspirations (657). John and Abigail were equal in their political support and for the revolution during this time. The times were tough as Abigail was left alone for long stretches while John was away and during these times there were battles and wars very near that she had to protect her family from by herself. Abigail always supported John to the utmost, never causing conflict or hesitation when he had to go away to devote himself to politics. The devotion is apparent in the letters as you read them you see how there wasn’t a lot of disagreeing. John trusted Abigail with all of his dealings whether it politics, religion, decisions. He has the highest of respect for her. As you can see he would seek her out often for advice and would follow through most instances. John Adams was born in Braintree, Massachusetts, in 1735 and Abigail Adams was born 0n November 11, 1744, in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Her maiden name was Abigail Smith. There were many similarities within each of their families growing up. They were both from very prominent families.
