At a young age she took interest in writing about the inside of her family’s social circle. At 23 she was married to a man from a well-established family. After thirty years of marriage she divorced him as he had serious emotional and depression problems. Wharton was even thought to have resented him for his incapability’s of the life she wanted , she felt tied down and stifled; the passion and romance had been long gone.
In a slight way with Jack as he makes sure she doesn’t have to go to juvie, but it’s truly shown on pages 258-259 when Vivian pays it forward to Molly and saves her. In this portion of the book Molly has been kicked out of the foster home she was in for the duration of the book. She doesn’t really have anywhere to go and if she went back into the system she would have to move and leave her life behind. Her boyfriend, her last year of high school in a familiar place, and many other things forcing her to start over, a difficult thing to do, especially at her age. Thankfully though Vivian comes through and gives Molly a room in her house.

Unfortunately my grandmother, had limited knowledge of the war itself, but had extensive amounts of familiarity with the social aspect of the sixties. My grandmother was 19 at the time of the war, but without attending college she had little to no familiarity with what was going on at the time. She quoted, “The closest I ever got to knowing discrete information about the war was when it came on the radio.” However, she was able to tell us how racism affected her life personally. During the novel, Pa starts to falter and hesitate under the pressure of all the misfortunes and Ma becomes increasingly influential in the decision-making process and acts with authority. As a leader, she guides her team with a firm, but loving hand; she maintains positive outlook and encourages others to do so as well and don’t give up. For example, when jobs become scarce at Weedpatch camp and the family are nearing the end of their funds, Ma forces the topic of moving from Weedpatch to another place, where all the men would find a job. Ma is an optimistic figure; she keeps the family going, uplifts and cheers them when they faces another downfall. To reassure her family, she would say "besides, us folks takes a pride in holdin' in.
In the last story The Most Dangerous Game, A man is forced to survive in ways he didn’t know were possible. Throughout all three stories, the main characters learn a life lesson, grow as people, and change from the experience they have been put in. In the story Marigolds, the main character Lizbeth is experiencing conflict in her life. Her conflict is that she is forced to become an adult. “Each morning our mother and father trudged wearily down the dirt road and around the bend (Pg50).” The parents did everything they could to support the family.
