The Courtroom and the Courthouse In a United States courtroom, there are many participants who contribute to the goal of justice for all. The judge, prosecutor, defense attorney, defendant, victim, witnesses, jurors, bailiff, and court reporter are each participants in the courtroom workgroup. Although every participant plays a different role in the process, they each contribute to the courts general objective of ensuring that the legal system remains fair, efficient, and effective to those individuals accused of committing a crime. A judge’s role is essential to court proceedings. He or she is responsible for ensuring the court proceedings are legal, and that the defendant receives his or her rights to due process of law.
Nonverbal and verbal communication can affect the areas above in different ways (Academicwritingtips.org, 2011).Verbal and nonverbal communications affect the process of communicating in all conversations among all individuals. Information presentation is important for ensuring that the receiver understands the portrayed message. Communications in the criminal justice arena in general must maintain professionalism, effective listening, efficient feedback, and appropriate information. Police situations such as public announcements to the press, courtroom settings in regards to testifying, correction facilities including employees, peers, inmates, and juvenile facilities pertaining to employees, peers, and inmates are all examples of specific areas within the criminal justice system affected by verbal and nonverbal communications discussed here within. The courtroom is not the only time in which lawyers use questioning, outside of this they are involved with interviews, depositions and witness rehearsals, all contextually different scenarios where questioning is implemented by lawyers. The first is simply to preside over the proceedings and ensure that order in the courtroom is upheld. The second is to make certain that the evidence that both the defense and the prosecuting party wish to present in the courtroom is legal and proper.
