Could World War 2 have been prevented? World War 2 was one of the bloodiest Wars fought ever in the history of mankind. World War 2 cost over 60 million lives and trillions of dollars, however many people believe that this war could have been avoided. Changes to the treaty of Versailles, the League of Nations, and the foreign policy of England, France, Germany, Japan and Russia many have prevented World War 2. One way that World War 2 could have been prevented was by changes to the Treaty of Versailles. The Treaty of Versailles was the peace treaty, signed on June 28, 1919, that ended World War 1. When the League of Nations was made its job was to solve disputes between nations in an effort to prevent all future wars. The main flaw in League of Nation was that it had no real military might and a standing army. This meant that they could not enforce any decisions they make. Also nations were free to join and leave the League as they pleased. In fact Germany left the League in 1933 with no consequences. The League was never able to show any military might to punish aggressors. They allowed Hitler to freely annex land, the Japanese to invade China and other pacific islands and Mussolini to invade Ethiopia and other lands. In all of these cases the League of Nations was basically powerless to enforce anything and could not handle the struggles diplomatically. Germany had an aggressive foreign poloicy. Hitlers dream was to build a German Empire and dominate Europe. In order to achieve this dream Hitler annexed The Rhineland (3/7/1935), Austria (3/11/38) and Czechoslavakia (3/15/39). England’s, France’s, and Russia’s forgein policy was the opposite of Germany, they were not aggressive and wanted to avoid war at all cost. In order to avoid war the allies practiced appeasment and Russia signed non aggresion acts with Germany. An example of appeasement was the Munich conference. The munich conference was held on 9/29/1938 was a meeting between Hilter, Mussolini, Chamberlain, and Daladier to disscuss Germany’s annexation of the sudetenland and to avoid war. The result of the conferecne was Germany gaining the sudetenland.. Japan had a foregien policy similar to Germany. They wanted to conquer land to spread their empire and to gain resources. Like Germany, Japan was able to do this without conquenece. The United States wanted to remain neutral and stay out of the war. They did sell materials to the Allies and emposed embargos on Japan but remained nuetral untill their homeland was attacked at Pearl Harbor.
