Corporate Strategy : « The Google Story » 1. Summary “The Google Story” is a book relating the successful growth of Google. The company was created in 1998 by two Ph. D. students at Stanford University in computer science, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. The two students had something significant in common: they were both second-generation computer. They grew up using computers in their elementary school years, under the tutelage of parents who used computers and sophisticated mathematics at home and at work. Larry’s father had been one of the first undergraduates to receive a computer science degree. Larry’s mother was a database consultant with a master’s degree in computer science. Sergey’s father was a math teacher and his mother was a mathematician. This set Larry and Sergey apart from others their age. Nowadays, more than 20000 people are employed by Google. Although the employees are working long hours, they are treated like family and they can enjoy of facilities like free meals, medical care and hair styling. The firm became in 2004 a public company. The homepage of the firm is traditionally simply designed: no pictures, no advertisement, only a white background and the name of the company written in primary colors. At first it was due to the lack of fund. Nevertheless, it appeared to be a good idea because people didn’t feel as though Google was trying to sell anything. One of the main objectives of the founders is to constantly motivate the collection of brilliant mathematicians, engineers, and technologists at the Googleplex to tackle larger and larger problems. Google gets paid for every search that happens, more or less, mostly through advertising. They also get paid by others companies, like AOL, that use their search engine.
