CHD is diagnosed as a narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart. Due to the narrowing of the arteries, blood and oxygen are able to flow less quickly to the heart, leaving the heart with inefficient blood and oxygen supply to function normally. This causes heart problems, highlighting symptoms like shortness of breath and chest pains. What Causes CHD?CHD is commonly caused by atherosclerosis, a condition which occurs when materials such as fat form a plaque build-up on artery walls, causing the arteries to grow narrow, and blood and oxygen flow lessen. As this occurs, blood and oxygen flow to the heart can drastically slow or even stop. This can cause shortness of breath, stable angina (chest pain), and heart attacks, especially when strenuously active (e.g. playing sports). There are certain factors that can increase the risk of getting CHD, including: Men in their 40's have a higher risk of getting CHD than woman, however, once women reach menopause, the risk is even across both genders. Family history or bad genes (CHD is a hereditary disease) Diabetes High blood pressure The older you get, the more susceptible you are to contracting CHD Abnormal
