Describe the value of coral reefs to the Caribbean Society and culture. Coral reefs are made up of coral polyps and inorganic life. There are usually found in clear, shallow, warm and saline waters. Coral polyps are small soft-bodied creatures which absorb calcium carbonate found in the water and builds up a “hard casing” of limestone. Coral reefs are found through-out the Caribbean and their value is critical, broadly involving physical, environmental, economic and health benefits to the Caribbean society and culture. Coral reefs act as a barrier in the ocean against large powerful waves. They reduce the energy of incoming waves which may have been caused by hurricanes or earthquakes. Coral reefs are a major part of eco-tourism in the Caribbean. They allow activities such as snorkeling, scuba-diving, game-fishing and photography to take place which earn Caribbean countries large amounts of tourist dollars thus increasing its gross domestic product. Reefs are also viewed by spectators through glass bottomed boats. This is seen at Buccoo Reef in Tobago. The biodiversity of coral reefs also allows fishing to be engaged in. Thus, reefs act as a source of food and sustenance to man. The cottage industry is also supported by coral reefs as jewelry is made from the attractive shells and corals which can then be sold as necklaces and other body-wear. Farming, through the promotion of aqua culture is also derived from the presence of reefs in the Caribbean. Coral reefs also have the potential for producing new medicines in the future. Reef organisms produce different chemicals for self-protection which are presently being researched by scientists. This could mean a healthy population and thus a better standard of living in the future. Coral reefs are indisputably beneficial to the Caribbean to the physical, environmental, economic and health landscape. The survival of coral reefs however is threatened by the negligence showed towards it. These benefits are slowly dwindling and may soon be removed if the present attitude towards coral reefs is not
