Coolie Mother tells a story of a hard-working mother who does everything she possibly can for her son so that he can get a good education. The word coolie means Indian servant and is often looked on negatively. David Dabydeen uses the word Coolie, instead of Indian or Indo-Guyanese to show that Jasmattie was viewed as those people of lower-class in her society. Stanza 1 is the start that shows that the mother is working hard for some reason which we do not know yet. We could tell from the very beginning that the woman is very poor, as she lives in a “bruk-down hut big like Bata-shoe box”, this shows how small and wrecked the house is, hence the words bruk-down and shoe box.
