There are many scientists around the world that apply knowledge skills and attitudes in order to find new knowledge or to add to existing theories. Jamaica has several scientists who have contributed to the development of new scientific endeavours, innovations and the eradication of deadly diseases. Because of their strong determination and persistence there are fewer outbreaks of these diseases that affect humans, many of the innovations have helped Jamaican people and others worldwide. Science can be defined as a body of knowledge, skills and attitudes that can assist individuals to understand and appreciate and make use of his environment. Science also has to deal with observed facts and the relationship between those facts. Science involves processes and attitudes that all scientists must observe and apply in order to achieve. The process skills and attitudes that Professor Grant used are; observation, communication, experimenting, inferring, classification, manipulation, critical thinking, inventiveness, curiosity, persistence and co- operation. In order to understand the processing skills and attitudes used by Professor Louis Grant the writer will first look at the work of a man who was acclaimed as a master of diseases, horse saviour, one of the greatest scientist, teacher and a pioneer. He is considered one of Jamaica’s brilliant scientists. He was born in Vere Clarendon on March 6, 1913. In his early years he was considered to be a promising student by the headmaster and was subsequently chosen as the recipient for the Vere Trust scholarship to Jamaica College. After concluding studies at Jamaica College, he pursued further studies in Scotland at Edinburgh University and later, received training at the London school of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene as a Tropical microbiologist.
