 CONFUCIUS AS A PHILOSOPHER AND TEACHER HST 101 Student Name Confucius as a Philosopher and Teacher Confucius was a Chinese philosopher, educator, and originator of the school of philosophy knows as Confucianism. He was the single most leading Chinese scholar and most adored person in Chinese history. No single philosopher has had as great an influence on Chinese thought as that of Confucius. He was the first Chinese to make teaching a profession and extend education to common people. His thought and teaching have defined the Chinese personality and today continue an inseparable part of their traditions. His best-known work, called Analects (Sayings) or collection of miscellaneous written passages, lays out his thoughts and ideas on the appropriate action of individuals in society and of rulers. His teachings about social conduct and individual personal, as well as on the ideal conduct of governing officials set standards that were cited, if not always followed, for centuries. According to an Educational Leadership article, “He conceptualized many psychological principles, such as habit, modeling, inquiry, peer influence, individual differences, readiness, sequencing, intuition, and performance-based education” (Cummins, 2007). He claimed no greatness; instead he looked to a past time that he saw as a golden age. Confucius lived from about 551-479 BCE, although most of what is known about him was written long after his death. He was born in the village of Zou in the country of Lu; he was a poor child of what used to be a noble family. As a child, he held make-believe temple rituals; as a young adult, he achieved a reputation for being polite, fair and he had a great love for education.
