Geraldine Brook’s novel ‘Year of Wonders’ vividly recounts the story of the seventeenth century plague which cripples and transforms the English town of Eyam. The Black Death which strikes the village not only reveals the stark contrast between the admirable and evil nature of the towns people, but it also redefines the villagers of Eyam. The personal beliefs and social order which were once static, collapse in the face of God’s ‘test.’ When faced with adversity and desperation, certain individuals embrace the challenge and their heroism shines through, whilst others instead choose to turn their backs on the town, acting in selfish and crude ways.
Conflict arises from a clash of perceptions, goals, or values in an arena where people care about the outcome. Confusion can cause conflict because individuals in the organization want to achieve their own personal goals while also working with others to achieve the common mission of the organization. Conflict can be helpful in making necessary changes within the home or work environment. However, unresolved conflict can result in feelings of dissatisfaction, unhappiness, hopelessness, depression, and other emotions. Most conflicts in the workplace can lead to a lot of negative situations, such as being permanently dismissed from your job, work productivity can decrease, it can also increase absenteeism (which is having numerous absences from your job) and sometimes could even result in violence or serious crimes.
Activism is consistent effort of promotion for change economically, politically and environmentally. Women campaigned for change on multiple issues such as prohibition contraception and voting rights. Women’s civil rights did advance during 1865-1992, which benefited them. However activism was not the sole reason for the advancement of civil rights for women. Modernization throughout the time period is a factor of the advancement of civil rights for women since separate spheres, which was an ideology where men belonged in the public sphere that refers to the world of politics, economy and law.
The physical injury gives survivors something to hide behind. Changes, after conflict, are often seen to have a negative effect on the individual, but in some cases the endurance of the conflict can bring on a change for the positive. A transformation in the individual after encountering dissonance can forever shape their relationships with other people. Morals and beliefs can be altered through encountering altered, where the individual is forced to reflect upon their own thoughts. Survivors of conflict are never the same again.
The main effect is that ethnic stereotypes affect their normal life and bring so much inconvenience to them. Then, part of stereotypes increase cultural conflict and racial discrimination. It can lead to other mental as well as behavioral problems. A person with borderline personality disorder usually has a very distorted self-image and often feels worthless. He/she often experiences frequent mood swings, anger, and impulsiveness, which may push people away, even if he wants to have meaningful relationships. Don’t despair if you have this type of personality disorder.
Hate crimes affect the victim as well as the community. People commit hate crimes for various reasons; they are unwelcoming of those who aren’t of the same characteristics per se. They feel the need to bully those who they feel are beneath them to compensate for their own short comings. Hate crimes affect individuals from all walks of life. Including but not limited to those of religious, race, and sexual orientation.
There are many reasons for conflict among groups. While a group has decided advantages over an individual, namely a diversity of resources, ideas, and knowledge; this diversity can also lead to conflict. When a team comes together there are likely to be differences in values, opinions, attitudes, social factors, and ideas of power. These differences all contribute to the formation of conflict.
