On the Sidewalk Bleeding: Conflict Analysis Is everyone looking at you from the outside, and not paying attention to your inner, true self? Andy is struggling to keep his life after being stabbed. Judgement has taken over the world, and leaves Andy wounded on the sidewalk. In Even Hunter’s short story, “On the Sidewalk Bleeding,” particular contentions demonstrate the judgments made by society and community members, and reinforced internal strife in the main character himself. A member of a rival gang, the “Guardians”, stabs Andy, a member of the “Royals.” The “Guardians” do not think of Andy as Andy, they just see him as an adversary. When the gang member stabs Andy, he says, “This is for you Royal!” In this situation, the gang member does not know Andy’s name, he just notices the purple “Royal” jacket. In modern day, people judge based on the way others look, dress, or even who they talk to. In “On the Sidewalk Bleeding,” many people, such as the intoxicated man, the old woman, and Freddie and Angela, ambled past Andy without helping him. The old woman and the intoxicated man did not help because they could not hear Andy because of the rain. Freddie and Angela both saw Andy. They saw the purple jacket and did not want to get involved with the “Guardians.” Furthermore, H.K. Nunzio says, Freddie and Angela “refuse to offer Andy help, fearing the rival gang would retaliate.” Even the cop thinks of Andy as a “Royal.” “Even the cop who sees the dead boy acknowledges that Andy is a Royal before he records his name and information” (Nunzio). Andy struggles with conflicts against the other gang and many of the people who walk past him. Society did not notice that Andy was a young boy. Society focused on Andy being a “Royal.” “Unfortunately, society is too distracted by his purple Royals jacket to understand that Andy is a young boy who bleeds and dreams like every
