Confessions of a True Hero: The Truth about Holden Caulfield “The hero is one who kindles a great light in the world, who sets up blazing torches in the dark streets of life for men to see by.” This quote originates from Felix Alder, a Jewish rationalist. Holden Caulfield has definitely become a great source of light in the world, with his tremendous radiance being symbolized through his red hunting hat. Readers of The Catcher in the Rye have been vastly impacted by Holden’s acts of heroism. The term hero, defined as a remarkably brave person, fits Holden perfectly, although he doubts it himself sometimes. In The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger displays the protagonist Holden Caulfield as a hero through his prominent traits of courage, selflessness, and determination. In order to be a hero, one must exhibit the traits of a hero. Holden subsists as a very courageous individual. Courage is one of the most crucial characteristics of being a hero. He does not fear standing up to others, and out from the crowd. His red hunting cap symbolizes his desire to be unique. When I was all set to go, when I had my bags and all, I stood for a while next to the stairs and took a last look down the goddam corridor. I was sort of crying. I don’t know why. I put my red hunting hat on, and turned the peak around to the back, the way I liked it, and then I yelled at the top of my goddam voice, “Sleep tight, ya morons!” I’ll bet I woke up every bastard on the whole floor. Then I got the hell out. (Salinger 52). This quote displays Holden’s desire to do the unthinkable. While most would only fantasize about leaving school early and rousing most of the school with an unnecessary insult, in the process, Holden actually does it. Holden also confronts his own demons throughout the novel, primarily shown in the struggle of maturity and adulthood versus childhood
