The reason that I feel that random drug testing in schools is important is because there are drugs everywhere and can easily be found. The main reason that many teens start using drugs is because of peer pressure and they feel that's there way of being accepted. The reason drug testing would help schools is because now the parents these students will be able to know if there child is possibly doing any drugs and can help prevent them from further use. The schools can also provide counseling for these students which can benefit a safe and private way to stop using drugs. Many students would probably resent the fact of talking a drug test so, I feel that two random drug test during the school year would let the school know if they are doing drugs and by the second drug test if they have chosen to keep doing drugs. And since most schools test only students who do something more than just show up for class—like join an after-school club, or play a sport—kids can avoid the activities rather than quit drugs. Drugs in school are a very big issue because schools are a drug free environment.
Firstly, exposing children to guns and gun education will take away from the curiosity they might have later in life that would have led to an issue or incident. Sex education has shown that this method is effective because when a child is educated they will have a greater understanding about the dangers and other aspects of guns they wouldn’t have known about beforehand. Just like Jamie O’Meara (2000) was saying “that sex education is taught so that kids will have a better understanding of how their bodies work, why they feel sexual desires, and how to act (or not) on those desires”. Children will gain the confidence to make responsible choices when it comes to gun use and resulting in making better decisions. The media puts this image in children’s heads that there is something fun about having a gun and also that it gives you power and you can control people with it.
People always say that teenagers need a taste of reality right? Well this book provides it. But many people believe that this book should be banned for that same reason. It is too crude for a school curriculum. Yet I believe that this book, “The Chocolate War” by Robert Cormier, should be kept in schools to be read by teenagers.
Opening minds or closing them shut depending upon what the teen takes from the birds and the bees conversation. “Talk about sex early and often […talking] openly about sex in an age appropriate way, you can teach our teenager how to behave responsibly”(Teen Pregnancy Prevention 1). The intention to even speak to a teenager about sex is solely good. Adults want to give teens, as much information about sex to help them understand it. This knowledge is not only being offered in the school and socially but also in the household.
Marijuana: Will you let this pass? Have you ever thought about smoking marijuana? Do you know the facts, and risks? In the article “Just Say No,” by Patrick Shaw, smoking marijuana is said to increase chances of lung cancer, disturb safety by causing dangers such as stoned driving, and also cause short term memory loss. With all these risks I guess it becomes easy to understand as to why kids that smoke marijuana do poorly in school.
The problem that arises with this is that their kids could try to be rebellious to their parents’ rules and be sexually active. Due to these factors, it shows that the pros outweighs the cons and it would be beneficial to have mandatory sex education classes in middle schools and high schools. By educating the students, we can reduce the amount of unexpected pregnancies and lower the rate of sexually transmitted diseases. Additionally, there are medical benefits reaped from the birth control pill that can make a major impact on someone’s life. For these reasons, it is important to support sex education in the high school
If marijuana is legalized, people should have the freedom to smoke it where and when they want, also as much as they want. People would have the right to say yes or no to this drug. Adults should have the right to tell their children yes or no to smoking this drug. To a certain age they should have the right because they can not control there children’s lives forever. People say “Students who smoke marijuana tend to get lower grades and are more likely to drop out of school”.
The matter in question here is, whether distributing condoms in public high schools actually influences teenagers to participate in sexual activity. Rush Limbaugh’s opinion in his article “Condoms, the New Diploma” is that giving condoms to teenagers will encourage them to have sexual relations, and what should really be done is stimulate them to practice abstinence. Limbaugh also discusses that the motivation behind the mass distribution of condoms is ridiculous and misguided (515). His proposal is to focus on supporting abstinence but to supply protection for those that choose to repudiate. Limbaugh expresses his concern about how AIDS are a problem that came as a consequence of the sixties and seventies- the age of “free love and rampant one-night stands” (516), and about the welfare modifications, like the use of condoms.
For example, teenagers that don’t think they are at risk for acquiring Chlamydia from unprotected intercourse and multiple sex partners are unlikely to use condoms. In order to help these teenagers an accurate perception of their level of risk I have chosen to do an ad campaign. This intervention and activity convinces teenagers that people from all walks of life can be at risk of contracting Chlamydia. The ad campaign consists of teenage girls and teenage boys who talk about how they contracted a STD. This story will be portrayed on posters which will be put up in all local schools and after school centers.
There are free facilities that will hand out free birth control to students, why not antidepressants? This is only as long as they have had a medical evaluation advising them to be on the medication. There also needs to be more education on effects of drugs and alcohol associated with youth suicide. Completed suicide often happens when a child is under the influence (Doey & Steele, 2007). One way to keep illegal drugs and alcohol out of the hands of our youth would be to increase the legal drinking age and add to the severity of the punishment for drinking
