Q. 1 Discus the main consequences of rural-urban migration upon urban areas in Africa. DEFINITION 1. Consequence. • A consequence is that which results from a given action. • The effect, result, or outcome of something occurring earlier: The accident was the consequence of reckless driving. • Something produced by a cause or necessarily following from a set of conditions the economic consequences of the war. 2. Rural Country part of country usual characterized by farming and less developed in terms of social amenities, the population is usually sparsely distributed. 3. Urban. Places where are usually densely populated, there is well developed infrastructure, social amenities and with people of different culture. Migration. It is the movement a person or people from one geographical area of settlement to another. 4. Rural-urban migration- • Rural-urban migration is the moving of people from rural areas into cities. When cities grow rapidly, for example Nairobi and Johannesburg in the late 19th century or Shanghai a century later, the movement of people from rural communities into cities is considered to be the main cause. This kind of growth is especially commonplace in developing countries. 5. Urbanization • Urbanization is the physical growth of urban areas as a result of global change. Urbanization is also defined by the United Nations as movement of people from rural to urban areas with population growth equating to urban migration. 6. Geography. 7. What is Geography Urbanization in Africa It is estimated that in 1900 about 95% of Africa's inhabitants south of Sahara lived from the primary occupations of farming, hunting & gathering, cattle nomadism, and fishing meaning that less than 5% were urban. In 1950 (the start of the independence period) 14.7% of Africa's inhabitants were urban, in 2000 had it risen to 37.2% and it is expected
