Reflective Journal Concepts of 21st century learning and teaching. If today we will teach our children using education from Industrial Age, it will never prepare them for the tasks and expectations of the 21st century world. According to Rotherham and Willingham (2009) to be successful in 21st century students will need “21st century skills” such as critical thinking, problem solving and complex analysis. Equipping students with capabilities that will help them to be lifelong learners is one of the most important goals to achieve in education now (ACARA, n.d.). As Bolstad et al. (2012) state, unbundling is what our education system needs and to start this reassembling they suggest six leading principles. Some of them are: personalised learning, new view of equity, diversity and inclusivity and rethinking learners’ and teachers’ roles. Personalised learning First and second week’s readings made me realise that my knowledge of learning and teaching was still very much in the Industrial Era. I perceived personalised learning as individualised programme fitting the student and not putting the student at the centre of the system. I recognise that what made me think this way was my own personal learning experience (I started school in 1978). According to Robinson and Aronica (2009) students’ talents are overlooked in school very often. Too much attention is paid to math, science and language skills and other abilities are neglected. They also point out that people have multiply intelligences and that education should treat them equally. Education needs new directions. Bolstad et al. (2012), Curriculum Leadership (2011) and Crowther Centre for Learning and VICCSO (2012) all agree that personalised learning is one of the most important aspects of learning and teaching today.
