Computer Literacy and the Modern World Computer literacy is the knowledge and ability to use computers and technology efficiently. The number of abilities computers obtain is continuing to grow at an outstanding rate. As companies become more and more dependent on technology, the value a potential employee has may be measured in terms of his or her technological competency. The highest goal of a computer-literate person is to be able to learn and use new computer programs without large amounts of help. Computer literacy gives people of all ages an edge in both their careers and education. Computer literacy is significant because it is considered to be a very important skill to possess while in today’s world. Employers want their workers to have basic computer skills because their company becomes more dependent on computers. Many companies try to use computers to help run their company faster and cheaper. Besides computer use for the workplace, most households today have at least one computer as well. When I was growing up, we had a desktop computer in our house and I was on it all the time. Most of my use on it was the internet and games but it quickly turned into programming and photo shop from there. As personal computers become common place and they become more powerful, the concept of computer literacy is moving beyond basic functionality to more powerful applications of literacy. Having the knowledge to fix a problem on a computer would also be very helpful when being computer-literate. Like anything else, anything could go wrong at any moment and there always seems to be millions of different things that it could be. When becoming computer-literate it is also important to learn the basics of how it actually works.
