Because of Great Expectations’s criminal aspect, it was a very popular book at that time. There are many things Dickens added to Great Expectations so that the Victorians enjoyed his book even more and so that they felt a variety of emotions for every character at different times of the story. This includes how we feel about Pip in the opening chapters. Dickens immediately makes the readers feel sympathy towards Pip as story begins, when he is placed in front if his parents’ graves. “…my infant tongue could make of both names nothing longer or more explicit than
Sentimentality, the ostentatious parading of excessive and spurious emotion, is the mark of dishonesty, the inability to feel; the wet eyes of sentimentalist betray his aversion to experience, his fear of life, his arid heart; and it is always, therefore, the signal of secret and violent inhumanity, the mask of cruelty”(Baldwin, 496). Most readers will probably fall somewhere in the middle of these two extreme opinions. No matter if one enjoys the book or loathes it, it can’t be denied that Uncle Tom’s Cabin is a very influential American Classic. Some people even go as far as to speculate that Uncle Tom’s Cabin helped prompt Abraham Lincoln to start the Civil War (Ohio History Central). Even if the influence of Uncle Tom’s Cabin on the civil war is just a blown up myth, the book definitely had an impact on how people thought about how their religion and slavery were related.
Act 1 Scene 5 – Romeo and Juliet How does Shakespeare make Act 1 Scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet so exciting? Act 1 Scene 5 is one of the most important parts of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ because this is the scene when Romeo and Juliet first meet and it is love at first sight. Shakespeare has made this an enjoyable scene because he has used lots of emotions to make it more exciting and dramatic. Shakespeare makes the start of Act1 Scene 5 quite exciting because the serving men are preparing for some sort of party; this makes the atmosphere from the stage go into the audience because everyone is ready for what is going to happen next. Shakespeare also makes people know how rich Capulate is by the serving man saying “save me a piece of marchpane” marchpane was very expensive.
He read large amounts of literature from a variety of writers, poets, and philosophers which made his conversations much more engaging. Karl felt that his intellectual ability would make him great in poetry, sadly enough it had an opposite effect. His verses were thought to be of nothing more then “cerebral elaboration,” which meant he could only think logically
Social issues in Aristophanes comedy Introduction Comedy was derived from a Greek word komoidia, which means song. Aristotle argued that comedy was ultimately developed from song. With the introduction of comedy people did not grasp it quickly simply because no one took it seriously. Aristophanes is considered the best playwright of comedies in the classical literary period because of his comedies that are extant. Aristophanes, Eupolis, and Cratinus were among the best playwrights who ancient critics recognized for their literary works.

Thar. Experience 170 The Idiot “play analysis” In “The Idiot” I think Dostoyevsky was trying to show how twisted our society is, and how even a saint of a person is treated badly without deserve. I believe Dostoyevsky wrote this play with mostly realistic qualities, such as how people take advantage of “the nice guy” all the time with Prince Myshkin continuously being tricked by everyone he knew, and how the power of love makes you do crazy things with Rogozhin killing Nastasya even though he would have given anything to be with her. I thought most of the actors did a really good job. I did not like how some of the actors played double roles because in an already confusing play trying to follow “who is who” is not an easy task.
The tone of Miller’s stage directions and dialogue ranges from sincere to parodying, but, in general, the treatment is tender, though at times brutally honest, towards the protagonist’s plight. The ‘American Dream’, ‘abandonment’ and ‘betrayal’ also work as important themes within the play. Many critics describe Death of a Salesman as the first great American tragedy, and Miller gained eminence as a man who understood the deep essence of the United States. After World War II, the United States faced profound and irreconcilable domestic tensions and contradictions. Uneasy with this American milieu of denial and discord, a new generation of artists and writers influenced by existentialist philosophy and the hypocritical postwar condition took up arms in a battle for self-realization and expression of personal meaning.
Mary Magdalene is a controversial character even without the movie because it suggests that Jesus gave into temptation and may have had a relationship with this woman. I personally feel that the makers of this movie took this idea and expanded on it and made it even more controversial than what it is. Another instance where we see Jesus being overwhelmed is the scene with the Lepers. Here we see that he cannot handle the pressure of being the healer for all humankind. He even says “There is too little of me”.
But there have been some excellent texts written and filmed that use this technique to its full extent. These include Unknown Citizen by W.H Auden and The Great Dictator by Charlie Chaplin, one of the greatest controversial films of its time. Satire adds to the enjoyment of many texts and without it our world would be monotonous and life wouldn’t be as fun had it not been for this great technique. The Unknown Citizen by W.H Auden was a fantastic poem that uses ridicule to portray its point to the audience. The poem is about a man in society, overlooked and status deteriorated.
