COMPARISON OF THE FOUR PHILOSOPHIES OF EDUCATION Comparison of the Four Philosophies of Education At the beginning of the public education movement in the early 19th century, the issue of philosophy in education was a non-issue. School districts, as they began hiring, hired whomever they wanted, regardless of their education background or philosophy (Mirel, 2011). As schools of education began to evolve and grow in the 20th century, a teacher’s philosophy in education and how and what was 2 taught became more important. Today’s Common Core Curriculum and advanced teaching methods place more and more emphasis on philosophy and require a new teacher to explore four core philosophies of education and identify which one or ones he or she uses in the day to day application of their profession. This paper, in a matrix format, will: 1. Name the four types of educational philosophies, with definitions; 2. Identifies what information is taught under the philosophy; 3. Discusses the methods used by teachers who ascribe to the particular philosophy 4. Reviews the educational implications of each philosophy; 5. Names at least three relevant philosophers who espouse each type, using examples from both ancient and recent periods of history.
