Comparison Between the Tblt and Ppp Approaches

Make a comparison between the TBLT and PPP approaches. Two approaches that are well-known in terms of engaging students with communicative task are Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) and Practice-Presentation-Production (PPP) approaches. Both are stemmed from the traditional Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) which focuses on discourse, authentic texts and situations in which PPP is the weak CLT and TBLT is the strong CLT. However, there seem to be five areas that can be discussed to differentiate between both approaches. In this essay, I will start with the objectives of both approaches that explain their goals which determine what type of one lesson would be, followed by the focus on form, in which teacher will decide when it should be introduced. The third area that will be highlighted is the procedures involved for both TBLT and PPP where students need to engage in several stages in the language learning process. Whereas the fourth area that involves in this discussion is the structure which reflects the task connection or flow of both approaches. Lastly, the fifth area, the types of approach that should be taken into account so that we can determine how the lessons that based on both methods are conducted. The first area that can distinguish both approaches is in terms of their objectives, in which for PPP, it puts emphasise on language objectives where students are introduced to new language which could be new vocabulary, grammar structure or function. The linguistic focus part usually happens during presentation and practise stage where students learn the rules in the former stage and practise it in the latter. Whereas, TBLT is more likely focus on the completion of the target task that has been designed to be a communicative task using the target language. Therefore, it should not attempt to trap form.
