Mesopotamia offered little comfort or hope of prosperity as a people. The people of the north had to deal with poor soil and lots of rain. The south had good soil but no rain and the twin rivers gave them water. Destructive floods came at harvest time. Their only natural resource was clay. The earth gave them no metals, workable stone, or minerals. They had massive irrigation systems to support Mesopotamia and its agriculture. They had to fortify themselves as protection from there hostile neighbors. Were very good at managing their economy and society. They created such things as writing and literature. Their pictograms were ground breaking and nothing like them had ever been seen before. The epic Gilgamish, is about the king of Uruk who developed the first signs of urban life in Mesopotamia. Urban life changed Mesopotamia for the good, increasing the power, wealth, and status of the Mesopotamia people living this new urban lifestyle. The Mesopotamians kept slaves and had a greatly ranging social status system; from the very rich and powerful, too the very poor and dehumanized class and everything in between. They believed that the kings of their society were God kings, or human Gods. Women had rights, not at the same level as men, but they had certain rights. They were engaged in trading with the surrounding peoples to get the resources their home land would not provide them with. The Mesopotamians believed that the role of the humans was to serve the gods and to feed them through sacrifice. The king in Mesopotamia was responsible for regulating all aspects of his peoples lives. The Mesopotamians also had a very complex math system and used a number system that was from 1-60. Egyptian people were a more optimistic people than the Mesopotamians, and they valued the water
