One technique used for managing stress is SIT. This is used in Meichenbaum’s study on reducing exam stress. The good thing about this technique is that once the therapy is complete the patient has no reliance on anything or anyone as the coping strategies are learnt. However SIT does not get to the cause of the stress which could mean it comes back at a later date. On the other hand, this technique will only work if the client has a good working relationship with the therapist. If they do not get on the SIT will not work at all or may only work for a few months. Another technique for managing stress is biological. There are many drug treatments for stress such as analdohol which was tested in Budzynski’s research into drug related stress therapies. One problem with drugs as a treatment however, is that patients can become very dependent on the drugs and find it hard to come off them. However, they are a fast way of reducing stress until a more permanent technique can be practised. Overall, a combination of both drugs and therapy would be a good way of managing stress as they would together count-balance many of the problems of each therapy on their own. For example therapy could make a patient feel they were ready to come off the drugs and erase the issue of drug-dependency Another technique for managing stress is to have a large group of friends and socialise often. In Waxler and Morrison study, they found out that you are more prone to getting through breast cancer if you have a lot of social and emotional support. E.g. Food being made for you, child care and financial support compared to if you do not have all this support.
