Marisa Sweeney IB History Quinlan 15/5/2012 Group 2: Compare and contrast the methods used to consolidate power by Hitler and Mao Adolf Hitler and Mao Zedong, both prominent authoritarian leaders, consolidated their power through various different methods. Both leaders used similar methods, this included eliminating opposition, using favorable legislations, and gaining popular support through presenting their image and ideologies, however their execution differed. Both Mao and Hitler successfully eliminated those who opposed them and their parties. Mao rose to power violently, through the CCP’s victory in the Chinese Civil War while Hitler rose to power through legal means when he was appointed Chancellor of Germany. The two leaders, with their newfound power both immediately made sure to make their political parties the only accepted ones in the nation and banning any others. Hitler got rid of trade unions and other threats to the Nazi party by outlawing them; Mao did the same, making the Communist party the only legal political party in China. Hitler made sure his opposition stayed repressed, even putting forward a “purge” of the Nazi Party where he made sure to eliminate internal threats in The Night Of the Long Knives. All potential threats within the party were murdered. Mao did the same through initiating the Cultural Revolution, encouraging revolutionaries and radicals to challenge and attack the old party officials as Mao began to feel his power and authority was being threatened by those in The Great Hall of the People, specifically Liu Shaoqui and Deng Xiaoping. Mao wanted to continue the revolution and replace the old elite with a new one, thus sparking the Cultural Revolution of 1966 in which young people across China, primarily young adults and students, heeded the call of Chairman Mao and began an uproar that challenged the old revolutionaries of the
