Compare and Contrast of Art Works

Both art pieces “The Builders, The Family”, and “This is a Family in Harlem” were drawn and depicted by Jacob Lawrence. While looking at both of these pieces there are many things that may run through a person’s head; like their first impressions, what they see from examination, questions that come to mind, techniques, and the background details of the piece. While both of these pieces share many similarities they also have some differences. When a person first looks at these two pieces they might realize that three main colors are used, yellow, red, and blue, the primary colors. These bright colors are used in order to catch a person’s eye and to call their attention to a main aspect of the piece. Another thing shown in these two pieces is unity between the families, in “The Builders, The Family” the family is holding hands together while walking past the construction. As also in “This is a Family in Harlem” the family is sitting around a dinner table together eating. In both of the pieces the attention is brought to the background. In “The Builders, The Family” the attention is brought to the workers and in “This is a Family in Harlem” the attention is brought to the back of the house because of the big yellow wall. Another similarity is that both art works depict African American families. These are just some of the similarities shared between the two art works, there are also some differences. One main difference between these paintings is a person’s first impression. Many people have their own thoughts some may like the paintings some may not, it’s just a matter of opinion. In one painting the family looks wealthy, the father is wearing a suit and a top hat and the entire family is nicely dressed. On the other hand, the family in “This is a Family in Harlem” seems to be very poor due to the size of the room, and the condition and amount of things seen in
