In the book ‘Anthem’ ,Prometheus, also known as ‘Equality 7-2521’, learns that his whole life and raising was a lie, and that there was a time before him where there was not a dictatorial government. Ayn Rand uses plurality in Anthem to convey conformity. Obedience, by definition, is an action of complying with current customs, rules, or styles. Since being an individual is basically eliminated in the city portrayed in Anthem, it’s government can easily force it’s collectivist ideals on all its citizens, who now comply to it. Singular and possessive pronoun use is avoided in this society to help hold the idea of self-uselessness.
Creed types a suicide note about how everyone makes fun of him and how “people wish [he was] dead” (36-37). Chris felt that he didn’t belong in the town of Steepleton, and nobody knows where he went. In his suicide note, he wrote that Torey has a perfect life. He didn’t mention Ali, his next door neighbor. Rumor has it that she is “passing through high school on her back” (42).
Morgause gave birth to her sons and that is pretty much the only way she has a partial right to the title of a mother, because in any other form she is definitely not a mother. Morgause shows to be a woman full of vanity and is very conceited. This would be an example of her narcissism: “It was not that Morgause courted invisibility-indeed, she would have detested it, because she was beautiful” (White 218). Just by saying she “detested” being invisible “because she was beautiful” shows just how full of herself she is. The way she treats her children is un-motherly and selfish, for example when “she had not noticed that her children’s clothes were ruined: had not even scolded them about that” (White 263).
She also, obeyed her mother’s request, to bounce whenever she was bullied. To bounce means to ignore and pretend it wasn’t even there. Evyn kept to herself a lot. She never told or showed people how miserable she felt about moving. When Evyn first saw Eleni, with her red lipstick, black pants, and high heels, she thought Eleni looked nothing like a college professor and a mother.
Growing up, Jeremy Spurrs was always treated different. Not because he was different, but simply because he looked different. Jeremy was diagnosed with alopecia, a cruel disease that cost him to lose all hair on his body. Jeremy was unfortunately a subject this at age 3, and there was nothing his loving family could do to treat it. He was bald from head to toe- no arm hair, no eyebrows, no eyelashes, no nothing.
In my eyes she clearly shows that even when you’re a legal immigrant it shouldn’t affect you at all. But Mira still feel a sense of betrayal when she thinks about her sister, the fact that Bharati loved America and American traditions. And married an American of Canadian parentage, She wears American clothing; and adjusts to American society fairly quickly. Mira on the other hand doesn’t want to change; she doesn’t wish to adjust herself to the American culture. She still sticks to her Indian
THe World State doesn't want people to give their people responsibility because they want, “Stability, No civilization without social stability. No social stability without individual stability,” (Huxley, 42). The World State doesn’t give the people responsibility to because with responsibility, there is a need to fulfill the responsibility and stability is threatened when the responsibility isn’t. So the World State gives jobs that they know will be fulfilled and then when the job is done they are set loose like children. Despite the lack of responsibility, there are women who are not freemartins that, “did not forget their contraceptive precautions by the regulations,” (Huxley, 77).
Lenina is also described to be “uncommonly pretty”, this view of her is completely out of her sphere of influence as she is one of the characters who follows the ideology “Everyone belongs to everyone else”. For Lenina to be described as “uncommonly pretty” the whole concept of “everyone belonging to everyone else” is removed as she seems more individual and prettier than other women in the society. We
Victor mentions his upbringing ; “ No human being could have passed a happier childhood than myself”(Shelley 120). Victor had grown up with loving parents who were “ possessed by the very spirit of kindness and indulgence”(16), wealth and also knowledge which he had the opportunity to pursue. Victor at the end of the book is no longer the person he was before but someone who seemed to be what was left of Victor Frankenstein, an apparition. This downfall is due to his ambition. After isolating himself from everybody for two months while creating his monster, his health started to deteriorate, and in the end died alone.
When I first started reading A Brave New World, I was thinking of how terrible this society is. They produce children that are pre specified to do certain work. There are no families. And nobody seems to have any control over their lives. But the thing that was most interesting is that most of the people in this society were incredibly happy, fit and some even smart.
