Chapter 4 Main events Introduction of the word Conrad: One of the biggest events of this chapter is the introduction of the word Conrad. The narrator talks about the snipers and what will happen to them when they are discovered. He continues on to say “ He will utter that magical word, Conrad; then we will strike him down”. The word Conrad means friend, the Germans are in the exact same situation as them; so the word Conrad shows that they are equal and when used in battle they surrender. However, we learn that the word has no meaning to the soldiers as they would kill the sniper and any German soldier.
Although they identify that there is a sniper, they still fear him because they cannot discern exactly when he will strike. “Sooner or later this German sniper, who keeps us cowering in cold fear, will be caught in an advance by our troops.” Also in this chapter, the character of Brown, is killed by the sniper. Brown’s death would’ve made the narrator even more fearful of the unknown because he now knows what
I like the way he puts it across, when you read it in the sleeve you are like: huh?, but if you read the story it makes sense and is presented well. King is such a good story teller. He makes his points by using analogy. He takes stories that we are familiar with like the Borg from Start Trek, or the Flocks of Birds, and transposes them with First Nations issues. At first, you wonder if he is on acid, because his opening scenarios seem so illogical.
Vengeance is a big part of the novel, It helps Scout to learn that being revengeful is a dangerous thing. "Mr. Ewell approached [Atticus], cursed him, spat on him, and threatened to kill him." Cherrie's is full with juvenile rumours like this one, and it controls the minds of the young innocent cherries, because they have no way of knowing what is true or not anymore. Also the stories could be put into the letters to help add some entertainment for the recipient of the letter. These rumours are important to the narrative because it shapes the way the soldiers fear and think about the enemy. Alan Bourne wrote to his girlfriend that his mission was to “find VC and kill them”; Soldiers have an almost dogmatically believing that whatever they are ordered is law and must be followed without hesitation. Most soldiers would not even know the cause of the war they just know that ‘VC’ are the enemy and you must “Kill them”.
The reader is able to clearly see the personalities of the many characters through these techniques, and thus allows for the writer to outline the class conflict involved. The portrayal of the main idea that those people who are in the top social class mostly did not think too much about those at the bottom is also clear through the effective use of these language features and furthermore, arouses strong emotions within the reader. This thus provides the basis for the reader to understand that the ability to see beautiful things and have treasured experiences is not limited to those with status. An important technique within the short story is the use of showing not telling. Throughout the story, readers are not told that the Burnell family is rich but we are able to understand this through the way in which this family, and in particular the children, are described.
