Community Participation Paper There are a plethora of facets that go into shaping our individuality, values, beliefs, views, etc. I believe the most significant component that goes into developing our personalities are the communities we participate in, influence, and create. Since I was very young, a multitude of communities have gone into sculpting who I am today, some being more significant than others. Foremostly, I think having to juggle between two cultures throughout my life has caused a lot of identity crisis on my part, but has also deeply influenced my views, opinions, and beliefs. Since I am a first generation American, I have had to deal with my South Asian roots and the “American way of things” for as long as I can remember. Even though, this has caused me great frustration, consternation, and even alienation at times, I find this has allowed me to grow over time into a very diversified person, not just ethnically but intellectually and socially as well. So being involved in my South Asian and American community has trained me to be very accepting and open-minded of people, environments, and cultures/rituals in general. Moreover, being highly committed and involved with the NGO, Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), has brought great inspiration for me to make a difference in the world in whatever way I can. Being involved in this organization has also given me much knowledge about the ongoing issues in developing countries and what it is going to take to eradicate such issues as global poverty. Furthermore, the journey I underwent in Boy Scouts of America has taught me great skills and abilities from leadership to planning to being prepared for any event. It turned me into a global citizen and gave me wisdom to understand between what is right vs. wrong. Being in Boy Scouts and achieving the Eagle Scout rank has given me an eternal sense of
