COMMUNITY IMMERSION Community Immersion Angel Pratt USC-School of Social Work (VAC) Introduction Have you ever wondered does your environment affect one’s place in life? Do you ever evaluate your past and present as it relates to the contributing factors that has helped shape your identity? Do you know why you had a passion to become a social worker? Before describing the specific roles and responsibilities of a social worker it is needed to explain/define community. It was reported by particular residents that they were no affected by the low diversity of ethnic races living in the community. The majority of individuals living in West Ridge are predominantly African Americans. Household respondents reported a more positive sense of community vs. neighborhood with regard to: People within the community come together formally and informally (for ex. neighborhood watches and picnics). There was a more positive sense of neighborhood (vs. community) with regard to: People in their neighborhood trusted each other and shared similar interest and believed that the certain things were important to them such as recreation, social support and safety. A high percentage of people living in West Ridge felt that the community/neighborhood come together to offer support when there are issues. However, there is 53% of those living in West Ridge stated that they have little or no opportunity to affect how things happen in their community. Upon my observation, conversation and assessment of West Ridge Community, there were a few economic and social issues that I would like to state that had a negative /impact on those living in West Ridge Housing Development.
