Speech. Good afternoon, today I will be sharing with you some of the things I found in my research on the aged community group. When most people think of the aged community groups, they picture old, frail, wrinkly people with grey hair who are too
weak to do anything, when in reality many of the elderly population keeps themselves active and healthy by participating in sports like golf and lawn bowls, and keeping themselves occupied by participating in volunteer work. Although stereotypes do exist for a reason and a lot of the proportion of the aged members of the community are old, frail, wrinkly people who are too weak to do anything. As the humans body ages the immune system weakens allowing for more illnesses to be contracted. Some of the illnesses such as Ost-eo-per-sis and osteoarthritis affect the bones and joints, which will decrease the mobility of the aged and in turn may force them to retire which could lead to financial difficulties if they have not saved enough of in their superannuation. The government will then provide the aged with financial assistance programs such as pharmaceutical allowance, age pension, disability support pension, seniors cards and utilities allowances to help them though their financial difficulties. The aged have a positive contribution in several areas of the community. The community can benefit from the surge in numbers of retirees who are active healthy and independent, with many of them taking part in volunteer work and as they don’t work they have more time to attend musical concerts, theaters and art galleries more then than the younger generations, this will benefit the arts businesses in a community. For any community including the aged community group it is important to keep an open mind and not stereotype or discriminate against them because of their age.
