Running head: THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS 1 The Communication Process: Explanation of the Communication Process and its Components Timothy Langerud Northcentral Technical College THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS 2 Abstract Communication is a process of transmitting and receiving messages (verbal and nonverbal). It is important to have effective communication in business as it is in everyday life. Communication is a two way process, that involves getting your message across and understanding in what others have to say. For successful communication, feedback is crucial because it tells how your message is being interpreted. These are the four key steps to the communication process and their definitions. Sender (Encoder) The communicator or sender is the person who is sending the message. All communication begins with the sender. The sender can use verbal communication for example: talking or speaking. The sender can also use nonverbal communication for example: writing or gestures. Message The message is a communication in writing, in speech, or by signals. The message you are trying to send, can be languages, words, or gestures. The success of the message depends on what we say and how we say it. A message can enhance or distort effective communication. Receiver The receiver is the person receiving the message, making sense of it, or understanding and translating it into meaning. Communication is only successful when the reaction of the receiver is what the sender intended it to be. To achieve effective communication the sender and the receiver must share an understanding.
