Introduction to Communication
What is communication? “Communication is the process of creating shared understanding” (Barker, A. 2006). Good communication is essential in the workplace. In order to work well with others, one must be able to communicate effectively. The ability to interact effectively means you will have better discussions that accomplish your end goal. Interactions in the workplace occurs for many practical reasons: Share information, resolve differences, commit to an action, solve a problem, etc. Effective interactions also meets personal needs: Builds support for what you want to accomplish and encourages to want to achieve your discussion goals. Meeting both personal and practical needs will help communication be successful (Interaction skills for success, 2005). Words are specific and a key ingredient in any form of communication. Words help to make our communication efforts accurate and clear. By conversing with others, we influence others, who in turn influence us. “Communication is the glue that holds social organizations together” (Gomez-Mejia, Balkin, & Cardy 2008). Organizations cannot survive if there is a break down in communication.
