The conversational rituals common among women are often ways of “maintaining an appearance of equality, taking into account the effort of the exchange on the other person, using up effort to downplay the speaker’s authority so they can get the job done without flexing their muscles in an obvious way.” Women use conversational strategies to avoid appearing conceited and take another person’s feelings into account. They may seem less confident and competent than they really are. Both us men and women feel often that they aren’t getting enough credit for what they have done, not being listened to, and aren’t getting ahead as fast as they should. Every individual has his or her own style. “Women are more likely to downplay their certainty and learned as they were growing up that sounding too sure of themselves will make them unpopular.
The article clarifies how genders react to metamessages as well as how they can retrieve them and apply them to their daily conversations. Tannen explains how women retrieve metamessages into negative ways while men are more literal in their words. Her article states that metamessages can be found through silence, body language, listening signals, the misuse of pronouns, even regular conversations. Tannen explains the essential role metamessages play in relationships by exploring genders from their childhood friendships to their “cultural differences” and how they affect the communication in their intimate relationships (200). Tannen’s article is based on her theory of relations between men and women which states that men tend to be more literal about words while women, listen for metamessages in conversations.
Just the Way We Are Everyone thought that there are similar differences between males and females. Both genders are different through their social, emotional and intellectual qualities. Gender roles influence women and men in virtually every area of life including family and occupation, but are women and men subject to different roles or behavior expectations? Gender role by definition is,” the public image of being male or female that a person presents to others.” (Dictionary.com). In early American culture it was common for a women’s job to be an obedient housewife in clear contrast to the male’s duty to be a job holder.
Our society changes our attitudes and views on life more than our biological make-up. This dissertation investigates the hypothesis that in some cultures, men versus women cannot overcome stereotypes in the business world. Based upon both, feminist and masculine theory, the study argues that the characteristics that influence male and female behavior in the workplace are essentially, despite the fact that women are less likely than men to be promoted to high level positions. The paper concludes that stereotypes apply in general to both sexes and serve their purpose to help us make judgements when we do them intelligently and not absolutely. Considerably more work will need to be done to determine if individual differences in masculinity and femininity have both genetic and environmental components.
Women are likely to expect much more than just help in house chores or career development from men. They consider small discussions with their partners as signs of intimacy, care and responsiveness. However, men have different mechanics of conversation and due to the hierarchical system in which they work; they do not like listening as that makes them feel like an inferior. Therefore, they consider this demand of females unreasonable. Most of the conversation patterns of men and women differ because of their social interaction as children.
Sean Hopper Welch ENGL1301-086 15Sept2009 Rhetorical Analysis of Sex, Lies, and Conversation The author’s goal in this essay seems to be to point out differences in the way men and women communicate in an attempt to eliminate a major contributing factor to divorce. She likens men and women’s difficulties in communicating with difficulties in communicating between cultures. She identifies several factors that contribute to why men and women have these difficulties. I feel she identified situations that are seen and experienced in everyday life of men and women and by doing so has helped relationships worldwide. She begins with a real life situation to set the scene for the essay.

Jane Addams and her colleague Ellen Gates Starr founded Hull House a place for down and out women. Jane treated these women as friends and ignoring their faults, became very close to these women. Being close to these women allowed Jane to understand their struggle but much of the information she gathered remained unpublished. She saw social differentiation as a block that society needed to get over, infuriately she herself was a victim.
