Communication is defined as a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behaviors ("Communication," 2012). Anything that interferes with that exchange of information could be considered a communication barrier. Effective communication plays an important role in any profession, but especially in the criminal justice field where it is essential to have the information correct. This essay will cover the process of verbal and non-verbal and its components. The communication barriers in criminal justice organization and the strategies to overcome them will also be addressed. The process of verbal and nonverbal communication consists of four main parts; sending a message, a medium to convey the message, receiving the message, and feedback (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). The communication process begins someone forms a message of one or more thoughts that they wish to share with one or more other people. In order to share that message they must decide on the medium they wish to use. The common forms of communication media are written, verbal and by action (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). The appropriate medium choice can be very important in correctly and effectively relaying the intended message. If the message requires immediate feedback, then a verbal medium would be best. If the message is being be sent to a group of people then a written medium may be the best decision. Once a proper medium is chosen, the message must be received and understood. Understanding the message is an important part of the receiving process. This is why it is important that the message be clear, concise and easy to understand. Good communications skills like knowing your target audience and organizing your message appropriately can help your message to be easily understood.
