Communication and Its Importance Mona F. Jackson Post University Abstract Communication is an important tool used within an organization. Effective communication is essential for the proper delivery of an organization’s goals and messages. With the changes of the external environment, an organization must do everything in its power to keep up with the changes. Communication should create an environment in which individuals, managerial and non-managerial, can speak up to provide feedback and provide input. There are different forms of communications. There are also different channels through which information is passed. How effective communication is within an organization can determine its future. Communication and Its Importance Communication is generally defined as the exchange of information from one person to another (American Heritage, 1993). Communication in management, however, is defined as the transfer and understanding of meaning which acts to control employee behavior, motivate employees by clarifying what is to be done, how well they’re doing, and what can be done to improve performance and provides information individuals and groups need to get things done in organizations (Robbins & Coulter, 2012). Communication is necessary for effective management. There are several forms of communication. Several are used within organizations. Within an organization, one can expect to find verbal and non-verbal communications, formal and informal communications. On a daily basis, the environmental cultures are changing. Therefore, organizations may keep up with these changes in order to survive. Management should be able to recognize these changes and clearly relay the information to its employees.
