INTRODUCTION Content analysis is a research method used to study the content of messages in the media. In this assignment I will be discussing quantitative and qualitative content analysis and how these two types of content analysis differ and when they are used. I will also use Signorielli’s study to explore my own research about the amount of violence on television. I will later discuss the three types of media audience theory and how they can be applied to the given scenario. 2. QUANTITATIVE CONTENT ANALYSIS 2.1 Quantitative Content Analysis is based on numbers, statistics and applies scientific method. While qualitative content analysis is more critical as it digs deeper into meaning and understanding. Qualitative content analysis used when studying obvious or clear messages, while qualitative content analysis is best used for studying messages that are not as clear or obvious. 2.1.1 The purpose of this research is to establish the how easy it is for children under the age of sixteen to access violence on television.
