Surveys show that teens rely on naps to make them more refreshed. You should only take at the maximum a 45 minute nap anything more than that disrupts your biological clock and this is what causes you to wake up angry or irritable from a nap. Other factors also play a role in getting good night’s sleep. For example, caffeine plays a huge part in not getting any sleep, 31% of adolescents surveyed said that they cannot sleep after drinking a caffeine drink before bed. Technology also has a huge role in not getting to sleep.
We try to fit everything into one day and then work into the night to accomplish the impossible. According to “How Sleep Debt Hurts College Students”, by June J. Pilcher and Amy S. Walters, “College students are not aware of the extent to which sleep deprivation impairs their ability to complete cognitive tasks…”. Even if we get only a few hours of sleep, we college students use a variety of methods to try and beat Mr. Sandman. From coffee to energy drinks to pinching ourselves, there are many ways we try and cram as much as possible into a 24-hour period. One question I have come across in my years as a student isn’t the how we say awake, but the why we stay awake.
There are differences between adult and infant sleep. At birth there is more active sleep than adult REM sleep; about half of infant sleep is spent in active sleep. As well as this, adults can usually go fairly directly into the state of deep sleep, whereas infants in the early months enter sleep through an initial period of light sleep. After 20 minutes or more they gradually enter deep sleep. By the age of 6 months a circadian rhythm is established and by the age of 1 year infants are usually sleeping mainly at night, with 1 or 2 naps during the day.
Constantly being for the same class, students begin to fail, and who wouldn't be upset from that? Students then begin to act horrible in class. All of this could of been prevented if school start times were late. "Research shows that tropical adolescents natural time to fall asleep may be 11 pm or later; because of this change in their internal clocks, teens may feel wide awake at bedtime, even when they are exhausted. Adolescents require at least as much as they did as children generally 8 and a half each night" A person that's exhausted, can be very dangerous when out in a serious situation such as driving.
Due to the lack of nutrients this diet provides and such low calorie intake, this diet can be used for no more than 6 weeks, with a 3 week break in between. Now that we have discussed where these two diets began, let’s discuss the diet plans. HCG and Slim-Fast have two very different diet plans. Slim-Fast offers shakes, snack packages, and meal bars while, The HCG diet consists of a hormone called Human Chorionic Gonadotropin. This hormone is something that already exists in men and women, but it is increased in pregnant women and is said to speed up your metabolism.
Back to High School Means Less Sleep for Students As bad as it is, the new school year is just starting up and students are already sleep deprived. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has declared the frequent sleep-iness of our nation’s teenagers to be a chronic public health crisis of the nation. The series of cases involving busy students, forced to stay up late at night in order to finish their home-work, need to do so if they plan to be successful. These teens are involved in a variety of activities and have so much to do, from editing the school newspaper and playing second base on the softball team to working at the local deli to earn money to pay for a car, and don’t usually start working on their homework until late after when “normal” citizens retire to sleep. The AAP called on schools to start later so students could get additional sleep.
And, in an article by the National Sleep Foundation, their statistics show that the average 12th grader has about four different electronics in their room, which makes causes distraction and delays falling asleep. pg 523 According to a recent poll, sleep experts recommend 9 or more hours for adolescents but only 20% of children (ages 11-17) the recommended amount and most parents are unaware of their child’s sleep deprivation. And, just as sleep deprivation affects an adults capacity to function properly and make sound decisions, lack of sleep causes adolescents to fall asleep in class, arrive late to school, and feel down and
Friends and relatives don’t visit as frequently. The part that seems to be the most disheartening is the loneliness that elderly encounter from just being out of the loop of life. Alcohol being a depressant just compounds the loneliness and depression. I really think that the MD’s need to enforce the screening they are doing on the elderly and encourage the patients to be honest in this area. There are 1000’s of meetings for alcoholics all around the world and now there are “Meetings on the Go”.
I found that this was interesting because I did not know that on average only 7.6% of adults between the ages of 19-23 get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day. This would explain why 60% percent of all Americans are either overweight or obese. After the thirtieth day of Morgan Spurlock’s experiment, he had gained 24.5 pounds and increased his overall body mass by 13%. After stopping his experiment, it took several months to lose all of the weight that he had gained and to return to a normal healthy weight. I believe that although this experiment was very helpful it would have been scary for to have “catastrophic liver damage” or to be overweight because it would cause your heart to work harder and cause it to wear out faster.
It can affect one’s personality, their attitude towards things and towards schoolwork. Students who binge are most likely to miss class. Because of missing class, it results in a decline in their grade. Students who do this even once a month will increase the amount of times they miss class. Students who go to parties and do not drink a lot or students who do drink a lot will eventually enjoy getting drunk at one point.
