He uses Arthur Birling as a voice for capitalism, who is ridiculed by the inspector, a representative of socialism. The dialogue between them shows this, as the inspector twists what birling says. For example, when the inspector says “I’m sorry but you asked me a question”, and Birling says the inspector previously asked him an unnecessary question, the Inspector replies “It’s my duty to ask questions”. Priestly uses this symbolism as framework for the political ideology battle each character has with the inspector. As the political Ida of capitalism has corrupted the Birling family, Priestly shows the audience how the inspector, the voice of socialism, constantly out-wits the birling’s.
He got them to tell each other their sins and secrets. All little things they did that didn't matter added up to one young girls suicide and the death of her unborn child. "It's the way I like to... don't you, Mr Birling"" The inspector knew just how to talk to people, he had a way of manipulating them. Arthur Birling was a business man, he was also a father and a husband. When problems began to arise at work he did what he thought was best for his company, his family and himself of course.
Marx believed that societies grew and changed due to struggles of different social classes. Durkheim believed in studying the “social facts,” which would help determine if a society was healthy or pathological. Weber’s focus on the structure of society included the elements of class, status and power. Each sociologist had a great influence in the field of sociology, but took different approaches to studying societies. Sociology enables us to understand how society functions and under which circumstances.
He is having a rough day, and needs a way of escaping from the reality of his adversity. For me, a way of escaping a rough day is to get lost in a movie, where the adversity is of the characters, and none of yours to worry about. Unfortunately, drinking to escape the adversity in reality really just creates more adversity for oneself. We see this in counterparts when Farrington arrives home. On top of all the adversity Farrington has gone through during the day the alcohol brings out rage in Farrington to the point of beating his own son which simplifies down to more adversity in Farrington’s life.
The characters of A Doll’s House react to their sense of mutual alienation through the creation of elaborate social conventions. These conventions, if broken, can evoke a dramatic and hostile response from the community. The treatment of Krogstad is a good example of this phenomenon. Krogstad, who had previously been a well-respected member of his society, sees his social position vanish after having been found guilty of financial fraud. By failing to maintain an image of social respectability, Krogstad is abandoned by his community and
From the first line in the book, Miller has made Parris out to be a very forceful, powerful man as he shouts ‘Out of here!’ at Tituba as soon as she enters the room. Your first thoughts of Parris are that he is a very angry man but you soon find out that he has a whole different side to him. He is a very materialistic person, his main priority is himself and many of his parishioners think of him as an extremely greedy and selfish man. This is shown in the very first scene as we see Parris standing over his daughter Betty's sick bed. At first readers are made to feel bad for him but then you quickly realise that Parris is just worried about his reputation.
Brabantio, furious by the intentions of marriage of his daughter to “the Moor” believes that Othello used drugs and witchcraft to steal his daughter from him “O thou foul thief! Where hast thou stowed my daughter… though hast enchanted her” (1ii62-64) this overstatement shows the sudden disregard of Othello’s previous power in the community as an army general and the immediate hatred he receives as a result of the colour of his skin. Iago once again plans to ruin Othello as he suspects his wife has been unfaithful with Othello, and goes out to destroy his marriage, just adding to Iago’s anger causing him to
Explore how Birling and the Inspector represent “opposite ideological points of view”? Priestley uses his characters and opposite ideological points of view throughout the play to convey to the audience how people’s political and social views differed through society. A major theme is responsibility; Priestley is interested in our personal responsibility for our own actions and our collective responsibility to society. The play explores the effect of class, age and sex on people's attitudes to responsibility, and shows how prejudice can prevent people from acting responsibly. Mr. Birling is a microcosm of higher class business men in the period the play was set.
The concept of a classless society has been elaborated by Karl Marx, the father of Marxist philosophy which is the basis of the Communist ideology. As a member of a contemporary society under a democracy, my beliefs are rooted on a society made up of different classes. In order to get to a higher class of society, one has to work with sweat, and even blood. This idea has caused many revolutions because some who do not want the present structure of society want it to be restructured to suit the need of every individual. This essay is an attempt to discuss a classless society and to establish whether a classless society is attainable and sustainable in this century.
Helmer believes that “an atmosphere of lies infects and poisons the whole life of a home”. Nora’s subterfuge of forging a signature to borrow money for Helmer’s wellbeing went against his principle of reputation’s importance and was the trigger of Helmer’s spastic outburst near the end of the play.Character conflict is depicted much more explicitly in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf”.Many of the games that Martha and George play with the guests are based upon a power struggle for the satisfaction of insulting and enraging the spouse. The more subtle conflict in “A Doll’s House” is thus contrasting with the more obvious clashes in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf”.
