While decent parents tend to teach their children to be polite and kind to others, they also furnish them with the knowledge needed to endure their social environment, more specifically, the code of the street. When violence occurs, decent parents teach their children how to defend themselves and how to avoid becoming vulnerable victims. Unlike decent parents, street parents tend to exhibit a lack of concern for others and often have difficulties establishing a sincere sense of family and community. Street parents use the code of the street as an aggressive method of socializing their offspring into the violent subculture of the inner-cities. Anderson notes that the street-oriented family is typically discernible by social disorganization.
Some people seem to think there is. The real question here is; should the issue of teens being able to walk the streets at all hours of the night be left up to parents or should the government step up and take action regarding teen curfew to help keeps kids off the street and out of trouble? Being a parent often means being the “bad guy”. Setting rules and being strict isn’t fun for anyone but it is a necessary part of the job. They protect, provide for and teach their kids what they need to know to be successful in life.
There are kids out there that play cops and robbers it makes them so happy because they get to put a person in jail like a real cop. In this article I read called “Aloca police officer seen as a positive role model for children” by J.J. Kindered said “ that there was this kid in his neighborhood that told him that he wants to be like a police officer like him one day. This shows how children look up to police officers as if there are super heroes. There are some police officers that affect children who has parents in the law enforcement I read this article called “Children of the badge: The impact of stress on law enforcement children” by Mark Bond said “The law enforcement child will go through many different stages of acceptance of his/her parent's law enforcement job depending on age and cognitive development. Openly communicating with your child is the best approach to helping relieve stress of the unknown.
The “code” is lists of unwritten rules dominate people’s public behavior. He also used true stories to explain how street culture influences the life of people, especially youths’ life inner city. He also gave a description about two different types of the behavior of the families who live in the community where the crime and violence exist all the time. The book “Code of the Street” talks about many issues in inner city that happen not only in the past but also now, such as economic issue, drug issue, teen pregnancy, etc. In order to getting an ethnographic sigh of people’s daily life that how people were affected by street culture, Anderson used direct observation and conducted in-depth interview to gather his data.
Gang involvement is becoming a big issue today. It has been associated negatively with criminal acts and deviance. One of their major targets for recruitment are young teens to run their errands. In this essay I will talk about what it means to be in a gang and the different theories that could explain as to how and why young people are being involved into gang memberships and gang related crimes. I will be exploring Edwin Sutherlands Differential association and will talk about how gang and criminal behaviour is learned just like anything else.
April 23, 2015 Journal Entry #5: The Code of the Streets Elijah Anderson analyzes how the code of the streets impacts inner city youth. He links Poverty and racism of inner-city regions to adherence to a cultural orientation based on Demonstrations of respect. This includes gaining the respect which then becomes a central Feature of personal interactions; if it’s violated then it leads to violence. Interpersonal violence And aggression is the most serious problem within the poor inner city black community. Some Crimes include Muggings, burglaries, carjackings, and drug related shootings.
His analysis helps explain the complexity of the street interaction and provides explanation of the street violence. Combining elements of respect, loyalty, and honor, the “code of the street” is an informal system used to regulate social interactions in impoverished neighborhoods. The code of the street emerges where the influence of the police ends and personal responsibility for one's safety appears, resulting in a kind of "people's low", based on "street justice". One of the main problems in the poor inner-city black community is the interpersonal violence and aggression. Muggings, burglaries, carjacking, and drug-related shooting , which now happen quite often, concern all urban and many suburban residence.
People who are able to deal with family issues, learn from past mistakes, keep hope alive, and realize that death is not the answer are able to have a new beginning and essentially have the life they desire. A family is supposed to help with problems, not create them. A family is supposed to make a person feel loved and accepted, but sometimes a person can feel as if their family is their worst enemy. When Henry is arguing with his father after their war he says, “I have no mother. Get it through your head.
Parents are not prefect and everything they say may not be the right thing to do, but pleasing them is the best policy so kids should do it anyway. Twain warns “the best policy in the long run” (291) is to do what your parents say even when it is wrong, because if you do not and get caught, punishment will be waiting for you. That is advice that we have all heard, but find it impossible to follow while growing up. Since most children do not
This idea can be seen through Atticus Finch extremely well. He grew up in an overly prejudice time, yet all he tries to do is help people, and tries to teach his children to do the same thing. For instance, on page 30, he is trying to teach Scout not to judge people because she didn’t always know the other person view of things, or their side of the story. “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” -Atticus Finch. Even with her Father’s prompting she doesn’t seem to understand, as she clearly has prejudice towards people like the Ewells and Cuninghams just for being poor, or different than her.
