3.2 There are some barriers that affect communication. The environment could become a barrier where there is too much noise, or there could be poor lighting. Health problems also pose as a barrier if somebody has a medical condition or learning disability. In addition to that is someone has been under the influence of alcohol or drugs this could affect communication. Furthermore anxiety, attitudes, aggression or lack of confidence can all become a barrier in communication.
The support worker's role is to enable the individuals to communicate in their preferred way and support them in using it. My role as a support worker is to make sure the individual's communication needs are met in the way they prefer. Also to encourage communication and try different methods of communication to work out the best one for the individual and to enable them to communicate not only in the care/home environment, but also in the outside world, e.g. with members of the public.
