Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments better known as (C.L.I.A.) was developed in 1988 and certified by the (DHHS) Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. C.L.I.A. are Federal laboratory regulations that apply to all clinical laboratories that test human specimens for diagnosing, preventing, or treating diseases. C.L.I.A have several different certificates available depending on the level of testing performed in the lab, which are: Certificate of Waiver, Certificate for Provider Performed Microscopy Procedures (PPMP), Certificate of Compliance (laboratory is inspected by the State) and Certificate of Accreditation. Its mission statement is to make sure that the highest quality of laboratory testing is performed and to get accurate test results. C.L.IA. have three different tests a waived tests, tests of moderate complexity and tests of high complexity. CLIA are used to regulate all laboratory testing that is performed outside of the hospital setting C.L.I.A waived test are so simple that anyone can do them at home. Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments affects me by making sure that all my test are CLIA waived before I use them and helping me believe that my tests results are more accurate than a non-CLIA waived test.
