Partitioned When colonialism ends, a country is left in build itself up, like a drunken man recovering from a hangover. The hangover of colonialism in Clear Light of Day brings to light the disintegration of family relationships. While Clear Light of Day does not focus primarily on the political events of the partition, it however does address the drastic effects of such an event on the human relationships. For the purpose of this paper, I will show how the events of colonialism leading to the partitioning of India, severed family ties and relationships, forcing brother (friends) to turn against brother (friends). This change in family relationship therefore disintegrates crushes and destroys a person’s ambitions and turn friends into foes- so in reality the easy way to ruin a country/nation is to destroy human relationship People have ambitions in life, but sometimes those ambitions are thwarted by events beyond our individual control that forces people to make rash decisions which leads to conflict in the family relations. In Clear Light of Day Raja is so fascinated with Hyder Ali and his high culture leads him to find that “there could be no house as dismal as his own, as dusty and grimy and uncharming. He probably sees in Hyder Ali the life he would want to live, and that is his whole ambition as Desai implies “these possibilities were enticingly held out to him at the Hyder Ali’s. in this fascination he wants to “specialize in Islamic studies”(51). His father ridicules him for that calling it “rubbish” (51) which leads to arguments between father and son. However such conflicts are common in most family relationship when a child and parent do not agree on certain issues in life.
