Clean Water Makes a Difference Abstract The need for clean water in the developing African countries of Sierra Leone and Liberia is great and it affects the very foundations of their daily life, health, and welfare. Access to clean water will improve the life, health, and welfare of persons living in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Sierra Leone and Liberia are two lesser developed countries in Africa located on the western African coast. Sierra Leone is bordered by the North Atlantic Ocean, Guinea, and Liberia to the south. [pic] [pic] Sierra Leone Liberia is south of Sierra Leone and shares the border to the north. Its western border is also the North Atlantic Ocean, and Guinea and Cote D’ivoire are its remaining neighboring countries. [pic] [pic] Liberia As you can see from the maps on the prior page, Liberia and Sierra Leone are neighbors. Because of this, they have similar experiences and geography. Due to its coastal location, it is a tropical, lush rain forest, but because of the hard economic times, prolonged civil war, and extreme poverty people here experience, the beauty of the coastline is quickly erased by the harsh living conditions of its people. Liberia is Africa’s oldest republic with a population just over 3.3 million. Liberia is slightly larger than the state of Tennessee. On the Human Development Index (HDI), it ranks 176th of 179 nations charted. The HDI ranks member nations on overall health, education, and income. The life expectancy of a Liberian is 59 years. The average adult has attended 3.9 years of education, and ranks .484 on the poverty index. The poverty level on the HDI is 3.0 or higher. As you can see, Liberia is far below the baseline.
