Classification of Ultraviolet Radiation There are three types, or brands of Ultraviolet (UV) radiation; UVA, UVB, and UVC. Some of these UV rays are absorbed by the ozone layer. UVA: Wavelength: 320-400 nm, not absorbed, UVB: Wavelength: 290-320 nm, mostly absorbed some does reach earth’s surface, UVC: Wavelength: 100-290 nm, completely absorbed by the ozone layer (Environmental Protection Agency, 2010). UVA and UVB rays that do reach the earth can affect the environment, and cause serious health problems. UVA levels of radiation are more constant than UVB, and UVA is not filtered by glass. UV Index Some sunlight can be enjoyed; but too much exposure to the sun’s UV radiation could be dangerous. It can cause effects, such as sunburn, cataracts, and skin cancer, and other long-term health problems. Developed by the National Weather Service and the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the UV Index provides information so people can plan their daily outdoor activities to prevent too much exposure to UV rays. It predicts UV levels on a scale of one to 11+; one is a low risk of exposure and 11+ signifies a very high risk. The UV Index calculates on a next-day basis for Zip Codes in the United States, it looks at the weather conditions across the country that may affect the amount of UV rays that reaches the ground (EPA, 2010).The Intersun project help identifies and quantifies health risks from UV Index .They develop away to monitor change in UV-inducted health effects overtime Some people behavioral change on outdoor activity it also change to protect the general public, worker against the adverse effect of increasing UV radiation levels.
