The power is always yours Do what you like. Whatever warms your heart.” (Lines 159-165) This code of xenos seems to only apply when upset gods are not involved. Zeus’ approval of the Phaeacians punishment shows that human concerns are usually not the cause for conflict between gods. The gods instead use deception, alliances, and careful diplomatic negotiation to play out power struggles as opposed to open conflict. This is especially apparent when Zeus states, “The gods don’t disrespect you.

Critique: Defining Moments by Joseph L. Badaracco, Jr. Synopsis The book Defining Moments analyzed the various philosophical ideologies that provide managers a guideline for making critical business decisions. The book examines three different managers in specific situations where a right versus right conflict is presented before them. Chapter by chapter each situation is examined and compared to a particular philosophy that was applied to the outcome. Steve Lewis, Peter Adario, and Edouard Sakiz face different pivotal moments that will require each to make a decision that will define their and/or their company's values. Each decision made says some things about the person that has made it.
The most controversial topic within the group was conflict in the work place, how can it have a good affect? Small Groups Week three of MGT/311 we learned that in an organization setting communication is broken down in three common formal small-group networks. The first is Chain which strictly follows the chain of command. Second group is Wheel
They were not inventing anything new but reclaiming something ancient. This is why governments tend to fall apart, because people often want to come together freely and be themselves, rather then fit a mold that is presented for them. Hobbes foretold that it was a human condition that war fought by each against each, making it hard for anything good to come out of it, or learn
Thesis Statement: In The Allegory of the Cave, Socrates outlined a program that would make sure Athens had good rulers and a good government, which would have worked for Socrates time, but not in the present. The program would have benefits. Philosophers would make better leaders than normal people. No one would take office because of personal ambitions. Things would run better with no competition for office.
It is harder to rebel in irrational authority because being a minority is a great fear of many, but what we have been told throughout history is that minority rules over majority. Fromm assures us that the majority have been taught that there is only enough resources for the few, and not enough for the many. Until people realize obedience isn’t always necessary, they will not be able to move forward. The small amount that do are whats making the
Leaders must always struggle to maintain stability; there is an inevitable tension between a leader and those led. Power arouses suspicion and skepticism. Thucydides understood that those who possess great power fear that they may lose it; those who possess less power than their neighbors fear that they may be overwhelmed by those neighbors. These fears provide a sufficient cause of war. Thucydides’ concern was with state power, but the same dynamic may relate to individual politicians seeking power, effect, and then stability.
Leaders who use these powers must understand they come with strengths as well as weaknesses, for example in my opinion those leaders who use coercive power to influence by fear don’t really earn their subordinates and peers respect and true loyalty and sooner or later will fail. Leaders who are subject matter expert frequently inspire the respect, trust and loyalty of subordinates, peers and superior alike. Rewarding power could be both bad and good as it rewards deserving people and sometimes will reward the not so deserving ones creating conflict in the organization. Charisma power might lead those who like the leader, but the leader may not be knowledgeable or skill enough to make the right decisions and finally referent power could empower those with the resources and personal traits but once the resources run out, the leader may not be
One of the most important topics Locke wanted to encourage, was that people have control over the government, setting limited power for a temporary time, and in having this, the people can demolish the form of government if the government does not comply to the people’s needs “the people have a right to act as supreme, and continue the legislative in themselves” (Locke). He believed that using reasons to explain what is true will ensure the purpose of
