Information use in a company depends on the company and its core business. Generally speaking most companies are in the business of selling either a product or service to the public. In order to be successful, businesses try to gather information about their existing and potential customer. Once the data is correctly sorted and filtered, it is used to enhance the product or service. It is also used to target the right audience. The flow of information is also dependent on the type of business. Most likely path of information is the direct path. Personal information is collected through direct marketing by having potential customers fill out a questionnaire in return for a chance to win a prize. The information is collected individually through email marketing, traditional paper format or it’s obtained when company’s web site is visited. The refined data, in form of reports, is provided to management personnel for analysis. In my company, we completely deal with a different type of information for our business. I work at a public utility company and while we have a large database of customer information, it is only used for billing purposes. The information used in our business is about the gas and electric facilities. This is our most important asset. In this paper I will focus on information about company’s facilities. Most of the data is about existing equipment and is kept in our mapping department. The rest of it comes through New Business section. The flow of new business information is initiated by a potential customer through our web site, phone call or paper application for new business. The request has the physical address of the proposed business as well as the usage information. If the application was requested through paper application or telephone, it is entered into our database by an employee; otherwise the applicant directly enters the
