“The Tip of the Iceberg; JP Morgan Chase and Bear Stearns (A)” 1. Consider a traditional commercial bank. What would each side of its balance sheet have looked like? The financial statements used by banks are extremely different from the final statements you would normally see being used by most companies. When examining the balance sheet of a typical company you would see categories such as inventory, accounts payable, or accounts receivable, in a commercial bank balance sheet under assets you would find areas like loans and investments, and under liabilities you would find categories such as deposits and borrowings.
Abbey National, HBOS and Northern Rock (BSA, 2007) are a few of the ten building societies that demutualised into banks and none of them still exist as independent banks. According to Tayler (2003), building societies demutualise because members believe that they stand to make profits from retained earnings while managers stand to gain PLC type managerial perks such as remuneration pay and share options and also have the freedom to act and make financial decisions, with the aim to maximise profit. Firstly, this essay will discuss the effect that the global credit crisis had on Bradford & Bingley and why the bank struggled to recover. Then the different roles played by the Shareholders, Management, Texas Pacific Group, Financial Service Authority and the Bank of England will be examined. Next, parallels will be drawn between Northern Rock, another bank who fell to the perils of the credit crunch, and B&B.

Rolls-Royce numbers are 16.81% and 83.19 % respectively. In both cases we see that firms prefer to use their own capital. We cannot tell with certainty why this structure was chosen, but we can look for example at the level of liquidity. Unilever has 93% (cash to current liabilities). We can conclude that the firm has enough cash to meet its obligations and able to generate cash flow to use it for project financing when needed.
Indian Case Studies 149 6. Indian Case Studies PL Beena, Subir Gokarn and Anjali Tandon INTRODUCTION The Indian case studies illustrate in particular the influence of industryspecific regulation and the nature of competition on entry strategies. The case of Baccardi-Martini illustrates the relationship between the regulatory environment and its disparity across states with the strategic decisions taken at corporate level. The Packaging case, which is reported anonymously, illustrates a staged acquisition of a private business previously owned by a domestic conglomerate, and acquired by a global player in the specific industry. The ABN Amro case illustrates the expansion of a foreign-owned bank during the stepwise liberalisation of the financial services industry, among other strategies by acquisition of the retail operation of another foreign investment bank.
CASE 13-5 SPRINGFIELD NATIONAL BANK This case needs to be approached from a bank lending officer’s point of view. There is no one given answer rather several different approaches to this case study. Basically, you need to determine the best empirical study and then formulate recommendations to either extend the line of credit sought by Dawson Stores Inc, or decline to do so based on the accounting information that has been provided by them. From what I have read and researched, I would strongly recommend that you start off by determining the starting point / focus of your empirical study of this case. In my opinion, I would focus on the current assets section of the statement of financial position since it provides the fundamentals of the company’s need for the loan.
