Chronic Kidney Disease and the Aging Population

Chronic Kidney Disease and the Aging Population As today’s population ages we have seen an increase in the elderly living at home and taking advantage of many community resources. One of those resources is community centers for the elderly where senior citizens can go for their social needs. “The older American adult population is expected to more than double by the year 2050, with the largest growth spurt taking place between 2010 and 2030 when the baby boom generation enters the 'golden years' (Gallagher, et. al, 2009).” Today’s seniors are living longer and have an increased need for social interaction and education about their healthcare. Community centers give seniors the opportunity to interact with others in age appropriate activities and learn about opportunities to assist them with healthcare related questions and needs. Many of the elderly live with at least one chronic condition. Living with a chronic illness can affect one’s ability to live independently and increase their risk for depression. “Unger et al (1999) notes the importance of social support with coping with the emotional anti physical consequences of chronic illness (Gallagher, et al, 2009).” Meeting at a community center to play Bingo, taking day trips in the community, and having a centralized referral system in place helps give seniors a sense of belonging and independence. “Despite the number of older adults with chronic illness, nearly 79 per cent of older adults who need long-term care live at home rather than in institutions (Merck Institutions of Aging and Health and Centers of Disease Control 2004). This would suggest that support for older adults from family, friends and the community is necessary for them to remain in their homes (Gallagher, et. al, 2009).” Bibliography Lewis, Sharon.
