Strategies for Improving Business Communication Education through BADM 301

In order to achieve the objective of improving communication education at the Moore School of Business, the creation and improvement of the course BADM 301 is essential. The first half of BADM 301 will focus on the improvement of individual communication. Bettering one’s own communication skills as an individual is important to one’s personal success in business. This half of the course will include sections covering public speaking, interview etiquette, and cultural communication. The second half of this course will center on group communication. Group communication is an essential aspect of business communication considering that every aspect of business involves people. Whether employees are working with others within their organization, or people from other businesses, knowing how to communicate effectively within a group is a key to success. The group communication half of the course will feature sections on strategies to effectively work in a group, team building activities, and improvement of social skills.
In recent years presentations have become an increasingly important factor in business communications. That is why a portion of this course is devoted to developing the student’s pubic speaking skills and giving them the experience to be comfortable in those situations. This part of the curriculum will cover the grammar and word usage that is appropriate in a business atmosphere, strategies to overcome anxiety and fear when presenting, the effects of body language and signals on the audience, and the advantage videotaping can give in correcting negative behavior and mannerisms.
