The Chinese Diaspora- the Chinese people of Indonesia The Chinese people of the country Indonesia. Chinese people can be adverted in parts of Indonesia. There are actually 4 groups of Chinese who have settled in Indonesia: Hokkien, Teu-Chiu, Hakka and Kanton people and these 4 groups are based on their language and origin in China. This emigration occurred between 16th to 19th centuries. The arrival of the Chinese people to Indonesia. The Chinese people had been a complete part of Indonesia long before the Dutch colonists arrived. The alliance of the Chinese into the society was disordered when the Dutch colonialists came to Indonesia in the seventeenth century for trading purposes. They eventually colonized Indonesia for political reasons, and ruled for about 350 years. To control its existence, the Dutch colonial government applied the divide and rule strategy and divided the people in three categories: Europeans or Westerners, foreign Easterners (Chinese, Indian and Arab descent) and native people. In general most Chinese in Indonesia work in trade. In Riau, the Hokkien are fishermen and some are farmers. The Hakka in Sumatera, work as labor in mining, while in West Kalimantan they are farmers. The Teo-Chiu work as farmers but many also labor in farm estates. The trade of Chinese in Indonesia is based on family's ownership and management. If their business grows, they open new branches which are given to their brother, child or any family member to manage. Most of the Chinese-Indonesians are Indonesian citizens. The people and the government do not distinguish between ethnic Chinese-Indonesians who are mostly Indonesian citizens and Chinese of non- Indonesian citizenship. This is due to the separation policy during the Dutch colonial rule that Indonesia’s former president Soeharto continued even more severely with the distribution of more than 60 anti-Chinese
