China’s Century of Revolutions: 1895-1980 COURSEWORK 2: ESSAY “Change is a key feature in China’s history of the 20th century. Choose three historical junctures we have studied and discuss how far they had changed China and to what extent these changes were revolutionary.” Wayne Bates December, 2010 Lecturer: Cangbai Wang “If you want to know the taste of a pear, you must change the pear by eating it yourself. If you want to know the theory and methods of revolution, you must take part in revolution. All genuine knowledge originates in direct experience.” – Mao Zedong This essay’s primary focus will be China during the 20th century through three chosen historical junctures and the extent in which this changed China and to what extent these changes were revolutionary. The three historical junctures that I have selected to discuss and analyse are: The Great Leap Forward, The Cultural Revolution, and Deng’s Reform. I have chosen these as the years separating them are relatively few so they can flow from one to the other more fluently. Also I feel that each of these share extremely similar qualities and if had not been for the first, the latter would not have commenced. Each of these are very important times within China at the time, as they mark both the attempts for change, and also the need for change. I also chose these as I believe that these were during some of the most ‘desperate’ of times as they followed countless failures in attempts to revolutionize and modernize. In order to complete the task of this essay, I will explain clearly the fundamentals of what exactly these three historical junctures are; and in doing so, I will be linking them in a chronological order showing an in depth understanding of the history of China’s change and the significance in which it stands even to the modern day now.
